It was then that things got weird, when he asked me to hold for a moment. The man who answered the phone for Hatfield Gun Company was very friendly, and listened while I explained the trouble I was having with the shotgun. When I heard the phone ring, I was hopeful there would be some sort of explanation for the stiff triggee. I own aĩmm Stoeger Cougar, made in Turkey with Beretta machinery and training, and it works flawlessly.
I noticed the shotgun is manufactured out of Turkey, which didn’t concern me too much. The company’s website was still under construction, which seemed odd. I snapped a few photos of the gun in its case, then set up the sandbags and loaded a DDupleks Monolit 32 steel slug into it.īefore calling the manufacturer I had done some research. It was a 45-minute drive back home, so I grumbled as I set up my steel silhouette at 25 yards. It wasn’t long before I was kicking myself for leaving the new, unopened box of standard birdshot shells at home. I made sure I brought slugs, a steel silhouette and some sandbags. Little did I know, this was just the beginning of a very painful story involving an awkward phone call and a lot of buyer’s remorse.īecause of family obligations, I wasn’t able to make it to the range until a week after the original purchase. At $99 I was still incredibly tempted to purchase it, so I went ahead and shelled out the cash for it. I figured it would ease up a little bit with wear. The trigger seemed abnormally heavy, around 6-7lbs or so, but it wasn’t terrible. The hammer was slightly on the stiffer side, but again, I didn’t worry because of previous experience with stubborn shotgun hammers. It certainly was a unique feature that piqued my curiosity, so I moved on to test the hammer and trigger. It was explained to me that you pull on the trigger guard to open it. I looked for a release lever and noticed it had none.
I’ve handled heavy recoil in the past, so I didn’t think much of it. I asked to take a look at it and noticed it was a little on the lighter side. One day that all changed, when I ran across the Hatfield single-shot shotgun in my local Walmart. There was always another gun project I had going on at the time, so I always justified them as being less money I have for my other guns. They were great for when me and the guys wanted to do some skeet shooting, because it was always handy to have a spare, but I hadn’t given it much thought. I have used plenty of single-shot shotguns, but never had owned one before. I’ve owned many shotguns over the years, both pump-action and semi-auto.
